How many disposable toothbrushes get thrown away every minute?
Have you ever wondered how many disposable toothbrushes are thrown away every minute?
Ok. Probably not. But we did and it's a staggering number.
In this blog post, we'll explore just how many disposable toothbrushes are discarded every minute and the environmental impact of all this waste.
According to a report by National Geographic, more than 1 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year in the United States alone. That's roughly 2-3 toothbrushes per person per year.
When you do the math, that comes out to about 83.3 million toothbrushes being thrown away every month, or approximately 2.8 million toothbrushes being discarded every day.
When we break it down even further, we can see that approximately 1 toothbrush is thrown away every second, or 60 toothbrushes every minute. This is a shocking amount, especially when you consider that most of these toothbrushes are made from plastic that takes hundreds of years to decompose.
And to make this even more disturbing, this number is only in the US! According to the National Geographic report, “And if everyone around the world followed those recommendations, about 23 billion toothbrushes would get trashed annually.”
If that estimate is accurate, then ~730 disposable toothbrushes would be thrown away every second.
So, what happens to all of these discarded toothbrushes?
Unfortunately, many of them end up in landfills or even worse, in our oceans. In fact, it's estimated that there are currently over 5 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans, much of which comes from single-use plastic items like toothbrushes.
The environmental impact of disposable toothbrushes is significant. Not only do they contribute to the ever-growing plastic pollution problem, but they also require valuable resources to produce.
From the oil used to make the plastic to the water used in the manufacturing process, disposable toothbrushes have a much larger environmental footprint than many people realize.
So, what can we do to reduce the number of disposable toothbrushes being thrown away every minute? One simple solution is to switch to a more sustainable toothbrush.
It's up to all of us to take responsibility for our environmental impact and make small changes in our daily lives to reduce our waste. By switching to sustainable options like Nada toothbrushes, we can all make a difference and help to protect our planet for future generations.
